Current Progress of Spin Physics for Spin-Neuromorphic Devices

Abstract :

Spin-Neuromorphic devices are one of the promising technology for Artificial Intelligence applications (AI). There are two branches in AI researches, one approach is developing algorithm such as “Deep learning” based on current von-Neumann architectures. However, von-Neumann architecture requires huge computing resources in order to mimic human brain. Alternative approach is neuromorphic devices, which is based on non von-Neumann architectures. In order to mimic human brain by neuromorphic devices, the functions of synapse and neuron must be realized. One of the feasible candidates for the neuromorphic devices is Spin-Neuromorphic. Since spin devices have several advantages of fast operating speed, non-volatile, small power consumption, etc., the research for Spin-Neuromorphic became a main stream by several world leading groups. In this presentation, I would like to review basic spin physics and current progress related with Spin-Neuromorphic devices. I will touch underlying physics of the basic building block for Spin-Neuromorphic devices such as lateral spin valves, domain wall motion based on spin Hall effect, anti-ferromagnetic spin-orbit torque devices, etc.
